Fahrelnissa Zeid

1901–1991 · Turkish

Other spellings: Fahr El Nissa Zeid · Fahrünnisa Zeid

Among the first Turkish painters to achieve international recognition. From beginnings with the D Group she went on to the vast abstract compositions she made in London and Paris, gathering the feeling of Byzantine mosaic, Islamic ornament and stained glass into a single surface. After a life that had married her into the Ottoman dynasty, she spent her last years in Amman teaching painting.
