Hale Asaf

1905–1938 · Turkish

One of the first professional women painters in Turkish art. She trained in Munich, Berlin and Paris, worked with André Lhote, and applied cubism's sense of structure to the figure. After a brief spell teaching in Turkey she returned to Paris, where she died at thirty-three. Her small but wholly assured body of work shows a painter making some of the most modern pictures of her generation.
