One of the youngest members of the 1914 Generation. He studied with Fernand Cormon in Paris and Lovis Corinth in Berlin, combining the light he took from impressionism with a thick, mobile brushstroke. From 1927 until his death he directed the Academy of Fine Arts. His portraits and figure interiors are also a record of the changing image of women in the Republic's first years.
