A painter known for his portraits of Anatolian women. He was among the founders of the Yeniler (Newcomers) Group, which took a socially realist line in the 1940s. He turned to abstraction for a period in the 1950s before returning to the figure. His large-eyed portraits, which gave a face to migration from the countryside to the city, became one of the most recognised — and most imitated — images in Turkish painting.
